madhyamanikāyaḥ 24 - rathavinītasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān rājagṛhe viharati sma veṇuvane kalandakanivāpe .

atha khalu saṃbahulāḥ jātibhūmakāḥ bhikṣavaḥ jātibhūmau varṣāmuṣitāḥ bhagavantam upasaṃcakramuḥ ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdan . ekānte niṣaṇṇān khalu tān bhikṣūn bhagavān etad avocat —

kaḥ nu khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, jātibhūmau jātibhūmakānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ sabrahmacāriṇām evaṃ saṃbhāvitaḥ — ātmanā ca alpecchaḥ alpecchakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca saṃtuṣṭaḥ saṃtuṣṭikathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca praviviktaḥ pravivekakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca asaṃsṛṣṭaḥ asaṃsargakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca ārabdhavīryaḥ vīryārambhakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca śīlasaṃpannaḥ śīlasaṃpadakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca samādhisaṃpannaḥ samādhisaṃpadakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca prajñāsaṃpannaḥ prajñāsaṃpadakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca vimuktisaṃpannaḥ vimuktisaṃpadakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca vimuktijñānadarśanasaṃpannaḥ vimuktijñānadarśanasaṃpadakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, avavādakaḥ vijñāpakaḥ saṃdarśakaḥ samādāpakaḥ samuttejakaḥ saṃpraharṣakaḥ sabrahmacāriṇām iti ?

pūrṇaḥ nāma, bhadanta, āyuṣmān maitrāyaṇīputraḥ jātibhūmau jātibhūmakānāṃ bhikṣūṇāṃ sabrahmacāriṇām evaṃ saṃbhāvitaḥ — ātmanā ca alpecchaḥ alpecchakathāṃ ca bhikṣūṇāṃ kartā, ātmanā ca saṃtuṣṭaḥ … avavādakaḥ vijñāpakaḥ saṃdarśakaḥ samādāpakaḥ samuttejakaḥ saṃpraharṣakaḥ sabrahmacāriṇām iti .

tena khalu punaḥ samayena āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ bhagavataḥ avidūre niṣaṇṇaḥ bhavati . atha khalu āyuṣmataḥ śāriputrasya etad abhūt —

lābhāḥ āyuṣmataḥ pūrṇasya maitrāyaṇīputrasya, sulabdhālābhāḥ āyuṣmataḥ pūrṇasya maitrāyaṇīputrasya, yasya vijñāḥ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ śāstuḥ saṃmukham anumṛśya anumṛśya varṇaṃ bhāṣante, taṃ ca śāstā abhyanumodate . api eva nāma vayam api kadācit karhacit āyuṣmatā pūrṇena maitrāyaṇīputreṇa sārdhaṃ samāgacchema, api eva nāma syāt kaścit eva kathāsaṃlāpaḥ iti .

atha khalu bhagavān rājagṛhe yathābhirāmaṃ vihṛtya śrāvastīṃ cārikāṃ prākrāmat . anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ caramāṇaḥ śrāvastīm āsannaḥ . tatra svid bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . aśrauṣīt khalu āyuṣmān pūrṇaḥ maitrāyaṇīputraḥ — bhagavān kila śrāvastīm anuprāptaḥ ; śrāvastyāṃ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān pūrṇaḥ maitrāyaṇīputraḥ śayanāsanaṃ saṃśāmya pātracīvaram ādāya śrāvastyāṃ cārikāṃ prākrāmat . anupūrveṇa cārikāṃ caramāṇaḥ śrāvastyāṃ jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme bhagavantam upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaṃ khalu āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ bhagavān dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśayām āsa samādāpayām āsa samuttejayām āsa saṃpraharṣayām āsa . atha khalu āyuṣmān pūrṇaḥ maitrāyaṇīputraḥ bhagavatā dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśitaḥ samādāpitaḥ samuttejitaḥ saṃpraharṣitaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhinandya anumudya utthāya āsanāt bhagavantam abhivādya pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā andhavanaṃ upasaṃcakrāma divāvihārāya .

atha khalu anyatamaḥ bhikṣuḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat — yasya khalu tvam, āyuṣman śāriputra, pūrṇasya nāma bhikṣoḥ maitrāyaṇīputrasya abhīkṣṇaṃ kīrtayamānaḥ abhūḥ, saḥ bhagavatā dharmyayā kathayā saṃdarśitaḥ samādāpitaḥ samuttejitaḥ saṃpraharṣitaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhinandya anumudya utthāya āsanāt bhagavantam abhivādya pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā andhavanaṃ prakrāntaḥ divāvihārāya iti .

atha khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ tvaramāṇarūpaḥ niṣādanam ādāya āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ anubabandha śīrṣānulokī . atha khalu āyuṣmān pūrṇaḥ maitrāyaṇīputraḥ andhavanam avagāhya anyatarasmin vṛkṣamūle divāvihārāya nyaṣīdat . āyuṣmān api khalu śāriputraḥ andhavanam avagāhya anyatarasmin vṛkṣamūle divāvihārāya nyaṣīdat .

atha khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ sāyāhnasamaye pratisaṃlayanāt utthitaḥ āyuṣmantam pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ upasaṃcakrāma ; upasaṃkramya āyuṣmatā pūrṇena maitrāyaṇīputreṇa sārdhaṃ samamodata . saṃmodanīyāṃ kathāṃ smāraṇīyāṃ vyatisārya ekānte nyaṣīdat . ekānte niṣaṇṇaḥ khalu āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputram etad avocat —

bhagavati nu, āyuṣman, brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

evam āyuṣman iti .

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, cittaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, dṛṣṭiviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, jñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti iti pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ no hi idam, āyuṣman iti vadasī . kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, cittaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti iti pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ no hi idam, āyuṣman iti vadasī . kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, dṛṣṭiviśuddhyartham … kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyartham … mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham … pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyartham … kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, jñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthaṃ bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti iti pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ no hi idam āyuṣman iti vadasī . kimarthaṃ tarhi āyuṣman, bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti ?

anupādāyaparinirvāṇārthaṃ khalu, āyuṣman, bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti .

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhiḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, cittaviśuddhiḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti ?

no hi idam, āyuṣman .

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, dṛṣṭiviśuddhiḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti ?

kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, anyatra ebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti ?

kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhiḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti iti pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ no hi idam, āyuṣman iti vadasī . kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, cittaviśuddhiḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti iti pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ no hi idam, āyuṣman iti vadasī . kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, dṛṣṭiviśuddhiḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti … kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhiḥ … mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhiḥ … pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhiḥ … kiṃ nu khalu, āyuṣman, jñānadarśanaviśuddhiḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti iti pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ no hi idam, āyuṣman iti vadasī . kiṃ punar, āyuṣman, anyatra ebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam iti iti pṛṣṭhaḥ samānaḥ no hi idam, āyuṣman iti vadasī . yathākathaṃ punar, āyuṣman, asya bhāṣitasya arthaḥ draṣṭavyaḥ iti ?

śīlaviśuddhiṃ cet, āyuṣman, bhagavān anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet, sopādānam eva samānam anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet . cittaviśuddhiṃ cet, āyuṣman, bhagavān anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet, sopādānam eva samānam anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet . dṛṣṭiviśuddhiṃ cet, āyuṣman, bhagavān anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet, sopādānam eva samānam anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet . kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhiṃ cet, āyuṣman, bhagavān anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet, sopādānam eva samānam anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet . mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhiṃ cet, āyuṣman, bhagavān anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet, sopādānam eva samānam anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet . pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhiṃ cet, āyuṣman, bhagavān anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet, sopādānam eva samānam anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet . jñānadarśanaviśuddhiṃ cet, āyuṣman, bhagavān anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet, sopādānam eva samānam anupādāyaparinirvāṇaṃ prajñāpayet . anyatra cet, āyuṣman, ebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ anupādāyaparinirvāṇam abhaviṣyat, pṛthagjanaḥ parinirvāyāt . pṛthagjanaḥ hi, āyuṣman, anyatra ebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ .

tena hi āyuṣman, upamāṃ te kariṣyāmi ; upamayā api iha kecit vijñāḥ puruṣāḥ bhāṣitasya artham ājānanti .

tadyathā api, āyuṣman, rājñaḥ prasenajitaḥ kausalasya śrāvastyāṃ prativasataḥ sākete kiṃcit eva ātyayikaṃ karaṇīyam utpadyeta . tasya antarā ca śrāvastīm antarā ca sāketaṃ sapta rathavinītāni upasthāpayeyuḥ . atha khalu, āyuṣman, rājā prasenajit kausalaḥ śrāvastyāḥ niṣkramya antaḥpuradvārāt prathamaṃ rathavinītam abhiruhet, prathamena rathavinītena dvitīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpnuyāt, prathamaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjet dvitīyaṃ rathavinītam abhiruhet . dvitīyena rathavinītena tṛtīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpnuyāt, dvitīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjet, tṛtīyaṃ rathavinītam abhiruhet . tṛtīyena rathavinītena caturthaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpnuyāt, tṛtīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjet, caturthaṃ rathavinītam abhiruhet . caturthena rathavinītena pañcamaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpnuyāt, caturthaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjet, pañcamaṃ rathavinītam abhiruhet . pañcamena rathavinītena ṣaṣṭhaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpnuyāt, pañcamaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjet, ṣaṣṭhaṃ rathavinītam abhiruhet . ṣaṣṭhena rathavinītena saptamaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpnuyāt, ṣaṣṭhaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjet, saptamaṃ rathavinītam abhiruhet . saptamena rathavinītena sāketaṃ anuprāpnuyāt antaḥpuradvāram . tam enam antaḥpuradvāragataṃ samānaṃ mitrāmātyāḥ jñātisālohitāḥ evaṃ pṛccheyuḥ — anena tvaṃ, mahārāja, rathavinītena śrāvastyāḥ sāketam anuprāptaḥ antaḥpuradvāram iti ? kathaṃ vyākurvan nu khalu, āyuṣman, rājā prasenajit kausalaḥ samyak vyākurvan vyākuryāt iti ?

evaṃ vyākurvan khalu, āyuṣman, rājā prasenajit kausalaḥ samyak vyākurvan vyākuryāt — iha me śrāvastyāṃ prativasataḥ sākete kiṃcit eva ātyayikaṃ karaṇīyam utpadi . tasya me antarā ca śrāvastīm antarā ca sāketaṃ sapta rathavinītāni upasthāpayan . atha khalu ahaṃ śrāvastyāḥ niṣkramya antaḥpuradvārāt prathamaṃ rathavinītam abhiruham . prathamena rathavinītena dvitīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpaṃ, prathamaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjaṃ dvitīyaṃ rathavinītam abhiruham . dvitīyena rathavinītena tṛtīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpaṃ, dvitīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjaṃ, tṛtīyaṃ rathavinītam abhiruham . tṛtīyena rathavinītena caturthaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpaṃ, tṛtīyaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjaṃ, caturthaṃ rathavinītam abhiruham . caturthena rathavinītena pañcamaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpaṃ, caturthaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjaṃ, pañcamaṃ rathavinītam abhiruham . pañcamena rathavinītena ṣaṣṭhaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpaṃ, pañcamaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjaṃ, ṣaṣṭhaṃ rathavinītam abhiruham . ṣaṣṭhena rathavinītena saptamaṃ rathavinītaṃ prāpaṃ, ṣaṣṭhaṃ rathavinītaṃ visṛjaṃ, saptamaṃ rathavinītam abhiruham . saptamena rathavinītena sāketam anuprāptaḥ antaḥpuradvāram iti . evaṃ vyākurvan khalu, āyuṣman, rājā prasenajit kausalaḥ samyak vyākurvan vyākuryāt iti .

evam eva khalu, āyuṣman, śīlaviśuddhiḥ yāvat eva cittaviśuddhyarthā, cittaviśuddhiḥ yāvat eva dṛṣṭiviśuddhyarthā, dṛṣṭiviśuddhiḥ yāvat eva kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhyarthā, kāṅkṣāvitaraṇaviśuddhiḥ yāvat eva mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthā, mārgāmārgajñānadarśanaviśuddhiḥ yāvat eva pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthā, pratipajjñānadarśanaviśuddhiḥ yāvat eva jñānadarśanaviśuddhyarthā, jñānadarśanaviśuddhiḥ yāvat eva anupādāyaparinirvāṇarthā . anupādāyaparinirvāṇārthaṃ khalu, āyuṣman, bhagavati brahmacaryam uṣyate iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān śāriputraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputram etad avocat — kimnāmā āyuṣmān, kathaṃ ca punar āyuṣmantaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ jānanti iti ?

pūrṇaḥ iti khalu me, āyuṣman, nāma ; maitrāyaṇīputraḥ iti ca punar māṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ jānanti iti .

āścaryam, āyuṣman, adbhutam, āyuṣman . yathā tat śrutavatā śrāvakena samyak eva śāstṛśāsanam ājānatā, evam eva āyuṣmatā pūrṇena maitrāyaṇīputreṇa gambhīrāḥ gambhīrapraśnāḥ anumṛśya anumṛśya vyākṛtāḥ . lābhāḥ sabrahmacāriṇām, sulabdhālābhāḥ sabrahmacāriṇām, ye āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ labhante darśanāya, labhante paryupāsanāya . cailaṇḍukena cet api sabrahmacāriṇaḥ āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ mūrdhnā pariharantas labheran darśanāya, labheran paryupāsanāya, teṣām api lābhāḥ teṣām api sulabdham, asmākam api lābhāḥ asmākam api sulabdham, ye vayam āyuṣmantaṃ pūrṇaṃ maitrāyaṇīputraṃ labhāmahe darśanāya, labhāmahe paryupāsanāya iti .

evam ukte, āyuṣmān pūrṇaḥ maitrāyaṇīputraḥ āyuṣmantaṃ śāriputram etad avocat — kimnāmā āyuṣmān, kathaṃ ca punar āyuṣmantaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ jānanti iti ?

upatiṣyaḥ iti khalu me, āyuṣman, nāma ; śāriputraḥ iti ca punar māṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ jānanti iti .
