madhyamanikāyaḥ 39 - mahāśvapurasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān aṅgeṣu viharati aśvapure nāma aṅgānāṃ nigame . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .

bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —

śramaṇāḥ śramaṇāḥ iti vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, janaḥ saṃjānīte . yūyaṃ ca punaḥ ke yūyam iti pṛṣṭāḥ samānāḥ śramaṇāḥ smaḥ iti pratijānītha ;

teṣāṃ vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, evaṃsamājñānāṃ satām evaṃpratijñānāṃ satāṃ — ye dharmāḥ śramaṇakaraṇāḥ ca brāhmaṇakaraṇāḥ ca tān dharmān samādāya vartiṣyāmahe, evaṃ naḥ iyam asmākaṃ samājñā ca satyā bhaviṣyati pratijñā ca bhūtā . yeṣāṃ ca vayaṃ cīvarapiṇḍapātaśayanāsanaglānapratyayabhaiṣajyapariṣkāraṃ paribhuñjmahe, teṣāṃ te kārāḥ asmāsu mahāphalāḥ bhaviṣyanti mahānuśaṃsāḥ, asmākaṃ ca eva iyaṃ pravrajyā avandhyā bhaviṣyati saphalā saudarkā iti . evaṃ hi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, śikṣitavyam .

katame ca, bhikṣavaḥ, dharmāḥ śramaṇakaraṇāḥ ca brāhmaṇakaraṇāḥ ca ? hrī-apatrapābhyāṃ samanvāgatāḥ bhaviṣyāmaḥ iti evaṃ hi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, śikṣitavyam . syāt khalu punaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, yuṣmākam evam syāt — hrī-apatrapābhyāṃ sma samanvāgatāḥ, alam etāvatā kṛtam etāvatā, anuprāptaḥ naḥ śrāmaṇyārthaḥ, na asti naḥ kiṃcit uttaraṃ karaṇīyam iti tāvatakena eva tuṣṭim āpadyadhvam . ārocayāmi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, prativedayāmi vaḥ, bhikṣavaḥ — mā vaḥ śrāmaṇyārthikānāṃ satāṃ śrāmaṇyārthaḥ parihīyata, sati uttare karaṇīye .

kiṃ ca, bhikṣavaḥ, uttaraṃ karaṇīyam ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ viviktaṃ śayanāsanaṃ bhajati — araṇyaṃ vṛkṣamūlaṃ parvataṃ kandaraṃ giriguhāṃ śmaśānaṃ vanaprastham abhyavakāśaṃ palālapuñjam .

saḥ paścādbhaktam piṇḍapātapratikrāntaḥ niṣīdati paryaṅkam ābhujya, ṛjuṃ kāyaṃ praṇidhāya parimukhaṃ smṛtim upasthāpya . saḥ abhidhyāṃ loke prahāya vigatābhidhyena cetasā viharati, abhidhyāyāḥ cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; vyāpādapradoṣaṃ prahāya avyāpannacittaḥ viharati, sarvaprāṇabhūtahitānukampī, vyāpādapradoṣāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; styānamiddhaṃ prahāya vigatastyānamiddhaḥ viharati, ālokasaṃjñī smṛtimān saṃprajānan, styānamiddhāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; auddhatyakaukṛtyaṃ prahāya anuddhataḥ viharati, adhyātmaṃ vyupaśāntacittaḥ, auddhatyakaukṛtyāt cittaṃ pariśodhayati ; vicikitsāṃ prahāya tīrṇavicikitsaḥ viharati, akathaṃkathī kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu, vicikitsāyāḥ cittaṃ pariśodhayati .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ ṛṇam ādāya karmāntān prayuñjīta . tasya te karmāntāḥ samṛdhyeyuḥ . saḥ yāni ca paurāṇāni ṛṇamūlāni tāni ca vyantīkuryāt, syāt ca asya uttaram avaśiṣṭaṃ dārabharaṇāya . tasya evam syāt — ahaṃ khalu pūrvaṃ ṛṇam ādāya karmāntān prāyukṣi, tasya me te karmāntāḥ samārdhuḥ . saḥ ahaṃ yāni ca paurāṇāni ṛṇamūlāni tāni ca vyantīkārṣam, asti ca me uttaram avaśiṣṭaṃ dārabharaṇāya iti . saḥ tatonidānaṃ labheta prāmodyam, adhigacchet saumanasyam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ ābādhikaḥ syāt duḥkhitaḥ bāḍhaglānaḥ, bhaktaṃ ca asya na chādayet, na ca asya kāye balamātrā . saḥ apareṇa samayena tasmāt ābādhāt mucyeta, bhaktaṃ ca asya chādayet, syāt ca asya kāye balamātrā . tasya evam syāt — ahaṃ khalu pūrvam ābādhikaḥ abhūvaṃ duḥkhitaḥ bāḍhaglānaḥ, bhaktaṃ ca me na acchādayat, na ca me āsīt kāye balamātrā, saḥ asmi etarhi tasmāt ābādhāt muktaḥ, bhaktaṃ ca me chādayati, asti ca me kāye balamātrā iti . saḥ tatonidānaṃ labheta prāmodyam, adhigacchet saumanasyam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ bandhanāgāre baddhaḥ syāt . saḥ apareṇa samayena tasmāt bandhanāt mucyeta svastinā abhayena, na ca asya kiṃcit bhogānāṃ vyayaḥ . tasya evam syāt — ahaṃ khalu pūrvaṃ bandhanāgāre baddhaḥ abhūvam, saḥ asmi etarhi tasmāt bandhanāt muktaḥ svastinā abhayena, na asti ca me kiṃcit bhogānāṃ vyayaḥ iti . saḥ tatonidānaṃ labheta prāmodyam, adhigacchet saumanasyam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ dāsaḥ syāt anātmādhīnaḥ parādhīnaḥ na yenakāmaṃgamaḥ . saḥ apareṇa samayena tasmāt dāsavyāt mucyeta ātmādhīnaḥ aparādhīnaḥ bhujiṣyaḥ yenakāmaṃgamaḥ . tasya evam syāt — ahaṃ khalu pūrvaṃ dāsaḥ abhūvam anātmādhīnaḥ parādhīnaḥ na yenakāmaṃgamaḥ, saḥ asmi etarhi tasmāt dāsavyāt muktaḥ ātmādhīnaḥ aparādhīnaḥ bhujiṣyaḥ yenakāmaṃgamaḥ iti . saḥ tatonidānaṃ labheta prāmodyam, adhigacchet saumanasyam .

tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, puruṣaḥ sadhanaḥ sabhogaḥ kāntārādhvānamārgaṃ pratipadyeta . saḥ apareṇa samayena tasmāt kāntārāt nistareta svastinā abhayena, na ca asya kiṃcit bhogānāṃ vyayaḥ . tasya evam syāt — ahaṃ khalu pūrvaṃ sadhanaḥ sabhogaḥ kāntārādhvānamārgaṃ prāpatsi . saḥ asmi etarhi tasmāt kāntārāt nistīrṇaḥ svastinā abhayena, na asti ca me kiṃcit bhogānāṃ vyayaḥ iti . saḥ tatonidānaṃ labheta prāmodyam, adhigacchet saumanasyam .

evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ yathā ṛṇaṃ yathā rogaṃ yathā bandhanāgāraṃ yathā dāsavyaṃ yathā kāntārādhvānamārgam, imāni pañca nīvaraṇāni aprahīṇāni ātmani samanupaśyati . tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, ānṛṇyaṃ yathā ārogyaṃ yathā bandhanāmokṣaṃ yathā bhujiṣyaṃ yathā kṣemāntabhūmim ; evam eva bhikṣuḥ imāni pañca nīvaraṇāni prahīṇāni ātmani samanupaśyati .

saḥ imāni pañca nīvaraṇāni prahāya cetasaḥ upakleśān prajñāyāḥ durbalīkaraṇān, vivicya eva kāmebhyaḥ vivicya akuśalebhyaḥ dharmebhyaḥ, savitarkaṃ savicāraṃ vivekajaṃ prītisukhaṃ prathamaṃ dhyānam upasaṃpadya viharati . saḥ imam eva kāyaṃ vivekajena prītisukhena abhiṣyandayati pariṣyandayati paripūrayati parisphurati, na asya kiṃcit sarvāvataḥ kāyasya vivekajena prītisukhena asphuṭaṃ bhavati . tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, dakṣaḥ snāpakaḥ vā snāpakāntevāsī vā kāṃsyasthāle snānīyacūrṇāni ākīrya udakena pariprokṣaṃ pariprokṣaṃ saṃnīyāt . sāyaṃ snānīyapiṇḍī snehānugatā snehaparetā sāntarabāhyā, sphuṭā snehena na ca pragkhariṇī .

evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ imam eva kāyaṃ vivekajena prītisukhena abhiṣyandayati pariṣyandayati paripūrayati parisphurati, na asya kiṃcit sarvāvataḥ kāyasya vivekajena prītisukhena asphuṭaṃ bhavati .
