The Connected Discourses 2 - Thorough Attention
एवं मया श्रुतम् — एकस्मिन् समये भगवान् श्रावस्त्यां विहरति स्म, जेतवनेऽनाथपिण्डदस्यारामे।
evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma, jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasyārāme.
Thus have I heard — Once the Bhagavān (Buddha) was dwelling in the city of Śrāvastī, at Jetavana, the grove of Anāthapiṇḍada.
तस्मिन् समये भगवान् भिक्षूनामन्त्रयामास— “रूपे, भिक्षवः, योनिशो मनसिकुरुत, रूपमनित्यमिति यथाभूतं प्रजानीत।
tasmin samaye bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayām āsa— “rūpe, bhikṣavaḥ, yoniśo manasikuruta, rūpam anityam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānīta.
At that time, the Bhagavān addressed the bhikṣus (monks), saying: “Bhikṣus, attend thoroughly to rūpa (physical appearance), and know it as it truly is: that rūpa is impermanent (anitya).
तत् कस्य हेतोः? यो हि, भिक्षवः, रूपे योनिशो मनसिकरोति, रूपमनित्यमिति यथाभूतं प्रजानाति, तस्य रूपे कामरागः प्रहीयते। कामरागप्रहाणाच्चित्तं विमुच्यत इत्युच्यते।
tat kasya hetoḥ? yo hi, bhikṣavaḥ, rūpe yoniśo manasikaroti, rūpam anityam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānāti, tasya rūpe kāmarāgaḥ prahīyate. kāmarāgaprahāṇāc cittaṃ vimucyata ity ucyate.
For what reason? Because, bhikṣus, for one who attends thoroughly to rūpa and knows it as it truly is—that rūpa is impermanent—their sensual lust (kāmarāga) for rūpa is abandoned. It is said that through the abandoning of sensual lust, the mind (citta) is liberated.
एवं वेदनायां संज्ञायां संस्कारेषु विज्ञाने च योनिशो मनसिकुरुत, विज्ञानमनित्यमिति यथाभूतं प्रजानीत।
evaṃ vedanāyāṃ saṃjñāyāṃ saṃskāreṣu vijñāne ca yoniśo manasikuruta, vijñānam anityam iti yathābhūtaṃ prajānīta.
Similarly, attend thoroughly to vedanā (sensory feelings), saṃjñā (one's notions), saṃskārāḥ (one's habits/conditioning), and vijñāna (one's learning/knowledge), and know them as they truly are: that they are impermanent.
तत् कस्य हेतोः? यो हि, भिक्षवः, विज्ञाने योनिशो मनसिकरोति, विज्ञानमनित्यमिति यथाभूतं प्रजानाति, तस्य विज्ञाने कामरागः प्रहीयते। कामरागप्रहाणाच्चित्तं विमुच्यत इत्युच्यते।

एवं विमुक्तचित्तो भिक्षुः सचेदाकाङ्क्षेत् स्वयमेव साक्षात्कर्तुं शक्नुयात्— ‘क्षीणा मे जातिः, उषितं ब्रह्मचर्यम्, कृतं करणीयम्, नापरमस्माद्भवात् प्रजानामीति’।”
evaṃ vimuktacitto bhikṣuḥ saced ākāṅkṣet svayam eva sākṣātkartuṃ śaknuyāt— ‘kṣīṇā me jātiḥ, uṣitaṃ brahmacaryam, kṛtaṃ karaṇīyam, nāparam asmād bhavāt prajānāmīti’.”
A bhikṣu with such a liberated mind, if they wish, can realize for themselves: ‘My rebirth has stopped; my brahmacarya (perfection of monastic life) is complete; I have accomplished what had to be accomplished; and I know (that I'll have) no further life beyond this one.’”
इदमवोचद्भगवान्। आत्तमनसस्ते भिक्षवो भगवतो भाषितमभ्यनन्दन्।
idam avocad bhagavān. āttamanasas te bhikṣavo bhagavato bhāṣitam abhyanandan.
The Bhagavān said this. Those bhikṣus, with delighted minds, rejoiced in the Bhagavān's speech.
