Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.1 — The Discourse on Crossing the Flood
एवं मया श्रुतम् — एकस्मिन् समये भगवान् श्रावस्त्यां विहरति स्म जेतवनेऽनाथपिण्डदस्य आरामे। अथ खलु अन्यतमा देवताऽतिक्रान्तायां रात्र्याम् अतिक्रान्तवर्णा केवलकल्पं जेतवनमवभास्य भगवन्तमुपसमक्रामत्; उपसङ्क्रम्य भगवन्तमभिवाद्य एकान्तेऽस्थात्।
evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme. atha khalu anyatamā devatā ’tikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇā kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya bhagavantam upasamakrāmat; upasaṅkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte ’sthāt.
Thus have I heard. At one time the Bhagavān (Buddha) was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. Then, when the night was advanced, a certain deity of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Bhagavān. Having approached and paid homage to the Bhagavān, she stood to one side.
एकान्ते स्थिता खलु सा देवता भगवन्तमेतदवोचत् — ‘कथं नु त्वं, मादृश, ओघमतारीः?’ इति।
ekānte sthitā khalu sā devatā bhagavantam etad avocat — ‘kathaṃ nu tvaṃ, mādṛśa, ogham atārīḥ?’ iti.
Standing to one side, that deity spoke this to the Bhagavān: ‘How, sir, did you cross the flood (ogha)?’
‘अप्रतिष्ठन् खल्वहम्, आयुष्मन्, अनायस्यन्नोघमतारिषम्’ इति।
‘apratiṣṭhan khalv aham, āyuṣman, anāyasyann ogham atāriṣam’ iti.
Sir, by not standing still (apratiṣṭhan) and by not exerting myself (anāyasyan), I crossed the flood.’
‘यथा कथं पुनस्त्वं, मादृश, अप्रतिष्ठन्ननायस्यन्नोघमतारीः?’ इति।
‘yathā kathaṃ punas tvaṃ, mādṛśa, apratiṣṭhann anāyasyann ogham atārīḥ?’ iti.
‘But in what way, sir, did you cross the flood by neither standing still, nor exerting?’
‘यदा खल्वहम्, आयुष्मन्, संतिष्ठामि तदा खलु संसीदामि; यदा खल्वहमायुष्मन्, आयस्यामि तदा खलु निरुह्ये। एवं खल्वहमायुष्मन्नप्रतिष्ठन्ननायस्यन्नोघमतारिषम्’ इति।
‘yadā khalv aham, āyuṣman, saṃtiṣṭhāmi tadā khalu saṃsīdāmi; yadā khalv aham, āyuṣman, āyasyāmi tadā khalu niruhye. evaṃ khalv aham, āyuṣman, apratiṣṭhann anāyasyann ogham atāriṣam’ iti.
‘Sir, when I stand still, I sink; and when I exert, I am swept away. Thus, sir, it is by not standing still and not exerting, that I crossed the flood.’
“चिराद् बत पश्यामि, ब्राह्मणं परिनिर्वृतम्।
अप्रतिष्ठन्ननायस्यंस्तीर्णं लोके विषक्तकान्” इति॥
“cirād bata paśyāmi, brāhmaṇaṃ parinirvṛtam.
apratiṣṭhann anāyasyaṃs tīrṇaṃ loke viṣaktakān” iti.
“After a long time, indeed, I see a brahmin fully perfected,
who, by not standing still and not exerting, has gone beyond attachments in the world).”
इदमवोचत् सा देवता। समनुज्ञातवान् शास्ता। अथ खलु सा देवता — “समनुज्ञाताहं शास्त्रा” इति भगवन्तमभिवाद्य प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा तत्रैवान्तरधात् ।
idam avocat sā devatā. samanujñātavān śāstā. atha khalu sā devatā — “samanujñātāhaṃ śāstrā” iti bhagavantam abhivādya pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā tatraivāntaradhāt.
The deity said this, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, thinking, “The teacher has approved of me,” paid homage to the Bhagavān, circumambulated him to the right, and vanished right there.
