saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.10 — araṇyasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.10 — The Forest

śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitā khalu sā devatā bhagavantaṃ gāthayā ’dhyabhāṣata —
At Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, a certain deity addressed the Bhagavān with a verse:

“araṇye viharatāṃ, śāntānāṃ brahmacāriṇām.
ekabhaktaṃ bhuñjānānāṃ, kena varṇaḥ prasīdati?” iti.

“For those dwelling in the forest, the peaceful, the celibate,
who eat but a single meal a day—due to what does their complexion become so bright?”

“atītaṃ nānusocanti, na prajalpanti nāgatam.
pratyutpannena yāpayanti, tena varṇaḥ prasīdati.
anāgataprajalpena, atītasyānuśocanena.
etābhyāṃ bālāḥ śuṣyanti, naḍa iva harito lūnaḥ” iti.

“They do not grieve for the past, nor do they prattle about the future.
They sustain themselves with what is present; that is why their complexion is bright.
By chattering about the future and grieving for the past,
the immature wither away, like a green reed that has been cut down.”
