saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.9 — mānakāmasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.9 — One who Desires Conceit
śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitā khalu sā devatā bhagavato ’ntika imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
At Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, a certain deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“na mānakāmasya damo ’sti,
na maunam asty asamāhitasya.
eko ’raṇye viharan pramattaḥ,
na mṛtyudheyasya taret pāram” iti.
“For one who desires conceit, there is no self-control;
for the one who doesnt concentrate mentally, there is no silence.
Dwelling alone in the forest, if heedless,
one cannot cross beyond Death's domain.”
“mānaṃ prahāya susamāhitātmā,
sucetāḥ sarvathā vipramuktaḥ.
eko ’raṇye viharann apramattaḥ,
sa mṛtyudheyasya taret pāram” iti.
“Having abandoned conceit, with a well-concentrated mind,
of good heart, completely liberated in every way;
dwelling alone in the forest, if heedful,
one can cross beyond the pale of Death's domain.”
