saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.26 — pradyotasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.26 — Things that glow

“kati loke asmin pradyotā yair lokaḥ prakāśyate.
bhagavantaṃ praṣṭum āgamya kathaṃ jānīyāma tat vayam iti.”

[A deity:] “How many glowing ones are there in this world, by which the world is illuminated?
Having arrived to ask the Bhagavān, how should we understand this?”

“catvāro loke pradyotāḥ pañcamo ’tra na vidyate.
divā tapati ādityo rātrau ābhāti candramāḥ.
atha agnir divārātraṃ tatra tatra prakāśate.
sambuddhas tapatāṃ śreṣṭha eṣā ābhā anuttarā iti.”

[The Bhagavān:] “There are four glowing ones in the world, a fifth is not found here.
By day the sun shines, at night the moon gives light.
Then fire, day and night, shines here and there.
The Perfectly Enlightened One is the best of those that glow; this is the unsurpassed glow.”
