Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.31 — The good people
evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme. atha khalu bahvyaḥ śatollāpakāyikā devatā atikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇāḥ kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya bhagavantam upasañcakramuḥ; upasaṅkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte tasthuḥ. ekānte sthitā khalu ekatamā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
Thus have I heard. At one time the Bhagavān was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. Then, when the night was advanced, many deities of the śatollāpa (“hundred-utterances”) group, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Bhagavān. Having approached and paid homage to the Bhagavān, they stood to one side. Standing to one side, one of the deities recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“sadbhir eva samāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṃstavam.
satāṃ saddharmam ājñāya śreyān bhavati na pāpīyān॥” iti.
“One should associate only with the good; with the good, one should cultivate intimacy.
Knowing the true Dharma of the good, one becomes better, not worse.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“sadbhir eva samāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṃstavam.
satāṃ saddharmam ājñāya prajñā labhyate nānyataḥ॥” iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“One should associate only with the good; with the good, one should cultivate intimacy.
Knowing the true Dharma of the good, wisdom is gained, not from any other source.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“sadbhir eva samāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṃstavam.
satāṃ saddharmam ājñāya śokamadhye na śocati॥” iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“One should associate only with the good; with the good, one should cultivate intimacy.
Knowing the true Dharma of the good, one does not grieve in the midst of sorrow.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“sadbhir eva samāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṃstavam.
satāṃ saddharmam ājñāya jñātimadhye virocate॥” iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“One should associate only with the good; with the good, one should cultivate intimacy.
Knowing the true Dharma of the good, one shines among one's kin.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“sadbhir eva samāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṃstavam.
satāṃ saddharmam ājñāya sattvā gacchanti sugatim॥” iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“One should associate only with the good; with the good, one should cultivate intimacy.
Knowing the true Dharma of the good, beings go to a good destination.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“sadbhir eva samāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṃstavam.
satāṃ saddharmam ājñāya sattvās tiṣṭhanti śātam 1)॥” iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“One should associate only with the good; with the good, one should cultivate intimacy.
Knowing the true Dharma of the good, beings stay happy.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavantam etad avocat — “kasya nu khalu bhagavan subhāṣitam?” iti.
sarvāsāṃ vaḥ subhāṣitaṃ paryāyeṇa, api ca mamāpi śṛṇuta —
“sadbhir eva samāsīta sadbhiḥ kurvīta saṃstavam.
satāṃ saddharmam ājñāya sarvaduḥkhāt pramucyate॥” iti.
Then another deity said this to the Bhagavān: “Whose, O Bhagavān, was the well-spoken verse?”
“All of yours were well-spoken in their own way. But listen to mine as well:
‘One should associate only with the good; with the good, one should cultivate intimacy.
Knowing the true Dharma of the good, one is freed from all suffering.’”
idam avocad bhagavān. āttamanasas tā devatā bhagavantam abhivādya pradakṣiṇaṃ kṛtvā tatraivāntaradhuḥ॥ iti.
The Bhagavān said this. Delighted, those deities paid homage to the Bhagavān, circumambulated him to the right, and vanished right there.
