Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.35 — The resentful ones
एकस्मिन् समये भगवान् श्रावस्त्यां विहरति स्म जेतवनेऽनाथपिण्डदस्य आरामे। अथ खलु बह्व्य उद्ध्यानसंज्ञिका देवता अतिक्रान्तायां रात्र्याम् अतिक्रान्तवर्णाः केवलकल्पं जेतवनम् अवभास्य भगवन्तम् उपसञ्चक्रमुः; उपसङ्क्रम्य विहायसि तस्थुः। विहायसि स्थिता खलु एकतमा देवता भगवतोऽन्तिके इमां गाथाम् अभाषत —
ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme. atha khalu bahvya apadhyānasaṃjñikā devatā atikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇāḥ kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya bhagavantam upasañcakramuḥ; upasaṅkramya vihāyasi tasthuḥ. vihāyasi sthitā khalu ekatamā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
At one time the Bhagavān was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. Then, many resentful deities, when the night was advanced, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Bhagavān; having approached, they stood in the air. Standing in the air, one of the deities recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“अन्यथा सन्तमात्मानम् अन्यथा यः प्रवेदयेत्।
निकृत्य कितवस्येव भुक्तं स्तेयेन तस्य तत्।
यद्धि कुर्यात् तद्धि वदेत् यन्न कुर्यान्न तद् वदेत्।
अकुर्वन्तं भाषमाणं परिजानन्ति पण्डिताः॥” इति
“anyathā santam ātmānam anyathā yaḥ pravedayet.
nikṛtya kitavasyeva bhuktaṃ steyena tasya tat.
yadd hi kuryāt tadd hi vadet yan na kuryān na tad vadet.
akurvantaṃ bhāṣamāṇaṃ parijānanti paṇḍitāḥ.” iti.
“One who, being one way, presents himself as another,
his gain is like that of a cheat, enjoyed through theft.
What one does, that one should say; what one does not do, one should not say.
The wise recognize one who speaks but does not act.”
“न यदिदं भाषितमात्रेण एकान्तश्रवणेन वा।
अनुक्रमितुं शक्या यायं प्रतिपद् दृढा।
यया धीराः प्रमुच्यन्ते ध्यायिनो मारबन्धनात्।
न वै धीराः प्रकुर्वन्ति विदित्वा लोकपर्यायम्।
आज्ञाय निर्वृता धीरास्तीर्णा लोके विषक्तकान्॥” इति॥
“na yad idaṃ bhāṣitamātreṇa ekāntaśravaṇena vā.
anukramituṃ śakyā yāyaṃ pratipad dṛḍhā.
yayā dhīrāḥ pramucyante dhyāyino mārabandhanāt.
na vai dhīrāḥ prakurvanti viditvā lokaparyāyam.
ājñāya nirvṛtā dhīrās tīrṇā loke viṣaktakān” iti.
“Not by mere talk or by solitary listening
can one follow this firm practice
by which the wise, the meditators, are freed from Māra's bonds.
Indeed, the wise do not act having known the way of the world.
Having understood, the wise are extinguished, having crossed over attachment in the world.”
अथ खलु ता देवताः पृथिव्यां प्रतिष्ठाय भगवतः पादयोः शिरसा निपात्य भगवन्तम् एतदवोचन् — “अत्ययो नो भदन्त अत्यगाद् यथाबालं यथामूढं यथाकुशलं, या वयं भगवन्तम् आसादयितव्यम् अमंस्महि। तासां नो भदन्त भगवान् अत्ययम् अत्ययतः प्रतिगृह्णातु आयत्यां संवराय॥” इति।
atha khalu tā devatāḥ pṛthivyāṃ pratiṣṭhāya bhagavataḥ pādayoḥ śirasā nipātya bhagavantam etad avocan — “atyayo no bhadanta atyagād yathābālaṃ yathāmūḍhaṃ yathākuśalaṃ, yā vayaṃ bhagavantam āsādayitavyam amaṃsmahi. tāsāṃ no bhadanta bhagavān atyayam atyayataḥ pratigṛhṇātu āyatyāṃ saṃvarāya॥” iti.
Then those deities, establishing themselves on the earth, fell with their heads at the Bhagavān's feet and said this to the Bhagavān: “A transgression, venerable sir, has overcome us, immaturely, deludedly, unskillfully, in that we thought to offend the Bhagavān. May the Bhagavān accept our transgression as a transgression, for the sake of future restraint.”
अथ खलु भगवान् स्मितं प्रादुरकरोत्। अथ खलु ता देवता भूयोमात्रेणापध्यायन्त्यो विहायसम् अभ्युदगच्छन्। एकातमा देवता भगवतोऽन्तिके इमां गाथाम् अभाषत —
atha khalu bhagavān smitaṃ prādurakarot. atha khalu tā devatā bhūyomātreṇāpadhyāyantyo vihāyasam abhyudagacchan. ekātamā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
Then the Bhagavān revealed a smile. Then those deities, becoming even more resentful, rose up into the air. One deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“अत्ययं देशयन्तीनां यश्चेन्न प्रतिगृह्णाति।
कोपान्तरो दोषगुरुः स वैरं प्रतिमुञ्चति॥” इति।
“atyayaṃ deśayantīnāṃ yaś cen na pratigṛhṇāti.
kopāntaro doṣaguruḥ sa vairaṃ pratimuñcati.” iti.
“One who does not accept the confession of those who point out their transgression,
with anger within and heavy fault, he releases enmity.”
“अत्ययश्चेन्न विद्येत नो चेहापगतं स्यात्।
वैराणि न च शाम्येयुः केनेह कुशलः स्यात्॥” इति।
“atyayaś cen na vidyeta no cehāpagataṃ syāt.
vairāṇi na ca śāmyeyuḥ keneha kuśalaḥ syāt.” iti.
“If there were no transgression, and if there were no fault here,
and if enmities did not cease, by what means would one be skillful here?”
“कस्यात्यया न विद्यन्ते कस्य नास्त्यपगतम्।
को न सम्मोहमापेदे कश्च धीरः सदा स्मृतः॥” इति।
“kasyātyayā na vidyante kasya nāsty apagatam.
ko na sammoham āpede kaś ca dhīraḥ sadā smṛtaḥ” iti.
“Whose transgressions do not exist? Who has no fault?
Who has not fallen into delusion? And who is the wise one, ever mindful?”
“तथागतस्य बुद्धस्य सर्वभूतानुकम्पिनः।
तस्यात्यया न विद्यन्ते तस्य नास्त्यपगतम्।
स न सम्मोहमापेदे स एव धीरः सदा स्मृतः॥” इति।
“tathāgatasya buddhasya sarvabhūtānukampinaḥ.
tasyātyayā na vidyante tasya nāsty apagatam.
sa na sammoham āpede sa eva dhīraḥ sadā smṛtaḥ.” iti.
“Of the Tathāgata, the Buddha, compassionate to all beings,
his transgressions do not exist, he has no fault.
He has not fallen into delusion; he alone is the wise one, ever mindful.”
“अत्ययं देशयन्तीनां यश्चेन्न प्रतिगृह्णाति।
कोपान्तरो दोषगुरुः स वैरं प्रतिमुञ्चति।
तद् वैरं नाभिनन्दामि प्रतिगृह्णामि वोऽत्ययम्॥” इति।
“atyayaṃ deśayantīnāṃ yaś cen na pratigṛhṇāti.
kopāntaro doṣaguruḥ sa vairaṃ pratimuñcati.
tad vairaṃ nābhinandāmi pratigṛhṇāmi vo ’tyayam.” iti.
“One who does not accept the confession of those who point out their transgression,
with anger within and heavy fault, he releases enmity.
I do not delight in that enmity; I accept your transgression.”
