saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.36 — śraddhāsūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.36 — Faith

ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane ’nāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme. atha khalu bahvyaḥ śatollāpakāyikā devatā atikrāntāyāṃ rātryām atikrāntavarṇāḥ kevalakalpaṃ jetavanam avabhāsya bhagavantam upasañcakramuḥ; upasaṅkramya bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte tasthuḥ. ekānte sthitā khalu ekatamā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
At one time the Bhagavān was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍada's Park. Then, when the night was advanced, many deities of the Śatollāpa (“hundred-utterances”) group, of surpassing beauty, illuminating the whole of Jeta's Grove, approached the Bhagavān. Having approached and paid homage to the Bhagavān, they stood to one side. Standing to one side, one of the deities recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:

“śraddhā dvitīyā puruṣasya bhavati,
no ced aśraddhām avatiṣṭhati.
yaśaś ca kīrtiś ca tato ’sya bhavati,
svargaṃ ca sa gacchati śarīraṃ vihāya.” iti.

“Faith is a person's best companion,
if one does not resort to faithlessness.
Fame and renown then come to him,
and he goes to heaven, having left the body behind.”

atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imā gāthā abhāṣata —
“krodhaṃ jahyād vijahyān mānaṃ,
saṃyojanaṃ sarvam atikrameta.
taṃ nāmarūpe ’sajjamānam,
akiñcanaṃ nānupatanti saṅgāḥ .” iti.

Then another deity recited these verses in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“One should abandon anger, give up pride,
and overcome all fetters.
Attachments do not pursue one who is unattached to name-and-form,
who is possessionless.”

“pramādam anuyuñjanti bālā durmedhaso janāḥ.
apramādaṃ ca medhāvī dhanaṃ śreṣṭham iva rakṣati.
mā pramādam anuyuñjīthā mā kāmaratisaṃstavam.
apramatto hi dhyāyan prāpnoti paramaṃ sukham .” iti.

“Immature people of little wisdom, indulge in negligence.
But the wise person guards diligence as their greatest treasure.
Do not indulge in negligence, nor in intimacy with sensual delight.
For the diligent one, meditating, attains the highest happiness.”
