“किंस्वित् प्रवसतो मित्रं, किंस्वित् मित्रं स्वके गृहे।
किं मित्रमर्थजातस्य, किं मित्रं साम्परायिकमिति॥”
“kiṃsvit pravasato mitraṃ, kiṃsvit mitraṃ svake gṛhe.
kiṃ mitram arthajātasya, kiṃ mitraṃ sāmparāyikam” iti.
“What is the friend of one who travels? What is the friend in one's own home?
What is the friend when a need has arisen? What is the friend for the future life?”

“सार्थः प्रवसतो मित्रं, माता मित्रं स्वके गृहे।
सहायोऽर्थजातस्य भवति मित्रं पुनः पुनः।
स्वयंकृतानि पुण्यानि, तन्मित्रं साम्परायिकमिति॥”
“sārthaḥ pravasato mitraṃ, mātā mitraṃ svake gṛhe.
sahāyo ’rthajātasya bhavati mitraṃ punaḥ punaḥ.
svayaṃkṛtāni puṇyāni, tanmitraṃ sāmparāyikam” iti.
“A caravan is the friend of one who travels; a mother is the friend in one's own home. A companion is a friend again and again when a need has arisen.
One's own good deeds—that is the friend for the future life.”
