samyuktanikāyaḥ 1.72 — rathasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.72 — The Chariot

“किंस्वित् रथस्य प्रज्ञानं, किंस्वित् प्रज्ञानमग्नेः।
किंस्वित् राष्ट्रस्य प्रज्ञानं, किंस्वित् प्रज्ञानं स्त्रियाः?” इति।
“kiṃ svit rathasya prajñānaṃ, kiṃ svit prajñānam agneḥ.
kiṃ svit rāṣṭrasya prajñānaṃ, kiṃ svit prajñānaṃ striyāḥ?” iti.
“What is the mark¹⁾ of a chariot? What is the mark of a fire?
What is the mark of a kingdom? What is the mark of a wife?”

“ध्वजो रथस्य प्रज्ञानं, धूमो प्रज्ञानमग्नेः।
राजा राष्ट्रस्य प्रज्ञानं, भर्ता प्रज्ञानं स्त्रियाः॥” इति।
“dhvajo rathasya prajñānaṃ, dhūmo prajñānam agneḥ.
rājā rāṣṭrasya prajñānaṃ, bhartā prajñānaṃ striyāḥ.” iti.
“A flag/banner is the mark of a chariot; smoke is the mark of a fire.
A king is the mark of a kingdom; a husband is the mark of a wife.”
