samyuktanikāyaḥ 1.80 — pradyotasūktam
Saṃyutta Nikāya 1.80 — The Light


“किंस्वित् लोके प्रद्योतः, किंस्वित् लोके जागरः।
किंस्वित् कर्मणि सजीवानां, किमस्य ईर्यापथः।
किंस्विदलसमनलसं च, माता पुत्रमिव पोषति।
किं भूतान्युपजीवन्ति, ये प्राणाः पृथिवीश्रिताः?” इति।
“kiṃ svit loke pradyotaḥ, kiṃ svit loke jāgaraḥ.
kiṃ svit karmaṇi sajīvānāṃ, kim asya īryāpathaḥ.
kiṃ svid alasam analasaṃ ca, mātā putram iva poṣati.
kiṃ bhūtāny upajīvanti, ye prāṇāḥ pṛthivīśritāḥ?” iti.
“What is the light in the world? What is the awakening in the world?
What is (engaged) in work among living beings? What is its path of movement?
What nourishes both the lazy and the diligent, like a mother her son?
On what do beings live, those creatures that depend on the earth?”

“प्रज्ञा लोके प्रद्योतः, स्मृतिर्लोके जागरः।
गावः कर्मणि सजीवानां, सीतास्य ईर्यापथः।
वृष्टिरलसमनलसं च, माता पुत्रमिव पोषति।
वृष्टिं भूतान्युपजीवन्ति, ये प्राणाः पृथिवीश्रिताः॥” इति।
“prajñā loke pradyotaḥ, smṛtir loke jāgaraḥ.
gāvaḥ karmaṇi sajīvānāṃ, sītāsya īryāpathaḥ.
vṛṣṭir alasam analasaṃ ca, mātā putram iva poṣati.
vṛṣṭiṃ bhūtāny upajīvanti, ye prāṇāḥ pṛthivīśritāḥ.” iti.
“Wisdom is the light in the world; alertness of mind is awakening in the world
Cattle are (engaged) in work among living beings; the furrow is its path of movement.
Rain nourishes both the lazy and the diligent, like a mother her son.
On rain do beings live, those creatures that depend on the earth.”
