श्रावस्तीनिदानम्। एकान्ते स्थितः खलु मागधो देवपुत्रो भगवन्तं गाथयाध्यभाषत —
śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitaḥ khalu māgadho devaputro bhagavantaṃ gāthayādhyabhāṣata —
The setting is Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, the devaputra Māgadha addressed the Bhagavān with a verse —

“कति लोके प्रद्योताः, यैर्लोकः प्रकाशते।
भवन्तं प्रष्टुमागम्य, कथं जानीयाम तद् वयम्” इति।
“kati loke pradyotāḥ, yair lokaḥ prakāśate.
bhavantaṃ praṣṭum āgamya, kathaṃ jānīyāma tad vayam” iti.
“How many lights are there in the world, by which the world is illuminated?
Having come to ask you, how may we know this?”

“चत्वारो लोके प्रद्योताः, पञ्चमोऽत्र न विद्यते।
दिवा तपत्यादित्यः, रात्रावाभाति चन्द्रमाः।
अथाग्निर्दिवा रात्रं तत्र तत्र प्रकाशते।
सम्बुद्धस्तपतां श्रेष्ठः, एषाभानुत्तरा” इति।
“catvāro loke pradyotāḥ, pañcamo ’tra na vidyate.
divā tapaty ādityaḥ, rātrāv ābhāti candramāḥ.
athāgnir divā rātraṃ tatra tatra prakāśate.
sambuddhas tapatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ, eṣābhānuttarā” iti.
“There are four lights in the world; a fifth is not found here.
The sun shines by day, the moon is luminous at night.
Then fire, day and night, shines here and there.
The Fully Enlightened One is the best of those that shine; this is the unsurpassed light.”
