madhyamanikāyaḥ 15 - anumānasūtram

evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhargeṣu viharati sma śiśumāragirau bhaiṣakalāvane mṛgadāve . tatra khalu āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ bhikṣūn āmantrayata — āyuṣmantaḥ bhikṣavaḥ iti .

āyuṣman iti khalu te bhikṣavaḥ āyuṣmataḥ mahāmaudgalyāyanasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ . āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāyanaḥ etad avocat —

pravārayati cet api, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ — vadantu māṃ āyuṣmantaḥ, vacanīyaḥ asmi āyuṣmadbhiḥ iti, saḥ ca bhavati durvacāḥ, daurvacasyakaraṇaiḥ dharmaiḥ samanvitaḥ, akṣamaḥ apradakṣiṇagrāhī anuśāsanyāḥ, atha khalu enaṃ sabrahmacāriṇaḥ na vaktavyānuśāsitavye manyante, na ca tasmin pudgale viśvāsam āpattavyaṃ manyante .

katame ca, āyuṣmantaḥ, daurvacasyakaraṇāḥ dharmāḥ ? iha, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pāpecchaḥ bhavati, pāpikānām icchānāṃ vaśaṃ gataḥ . yat api, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pāpecchaḥ bhavati, pāpikānām icchānāṃ vaśaṃ gataḥ — ayam api dharmaḥ daurvacasyakaraṇaḥ .

yaḥ khalu ayaṃ pudgalaḥ īrṣyuḥ matsarī, ayam me pudgalaḥ apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ ; ahaṃ cet eva khalu punaḥ syām īrṣyuḥ matsarī, aham api syāṃ pareṣām apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ iti . evaṃ jānatā, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā — anīrṣyuḥ bhaviṣyāmi amatsarī iti cittam utpādayitavyam .

yaḥ khalu ayaṃ pudgalaḥ śaṭhaḥ māyāvī, ayam me pudgalaḥ apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ ; ahaṃ cet eva khalu punaḥ syāṃ śaṭhaḥ māyāvī, aham api syāṃ pareṣām apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ iti . evaṃ jānatā, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā — aśaṭhaḥ bhaviṣyāmi amāyāvī iti cittam utpādayitavyam .

yaḥ khalu ayaṃ pudgalaḥ stabdhaḥ atimānī, ayam me pudgalaḥ apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ ; ahaṃ cet eva khalu punaḥ syāṃ stabdhaḥ atimānī, aham api syāṃ pareṣām apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ iti . evaṃ jānatā, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā — astabdhaḥ bhaviṣyāmi anatimānī iti cittam utpādayitavyam .

yaḥ khalu ayaṃ pudgalaḥ svadṛṣṭiparāmarśī ādhānagrāhī duṣpratiniḥsargī, ayam me pudgalaḥ apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ ; ahaṃ cet eva khalu punaḥ syāṃ svadṛṣṭiparāmarśī ādhānagrāhī duṣpratiniḥsargī, aham api syāṃ pareṣām apriyaḥ amanojñaḥ iti . evaṃ jānatā, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā — asvadṛṣṭiparāmarśī bhaviṣyāmi anādhānagrāhī supratiniḥsargī iti cittam utpādayitavyam .

tatra, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā ātmanā eva ātmānam evaṃ pratyavekṣitavyam — kiṃ nu khalu asmi pāpecchaḥ, pāpikānām icchānāṃ vaśaṃ gataḥ iti ? sacet, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — pāpecchaḥ khalu asmi, pāpikānām icchānāṃ vaśaṃ gataḥ iti, tena, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā teṣām eva pāpakānām akuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prahāṇāya vyāyamitavyam . sacet punaḥ, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ evaṃ jānāti — na khalu asmi pāpecchaḥ, na pāpikānām icchānāṃ vaśaṃ gataḥ iti, tena, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā tena eva prītiprāmodyābhyām vihartavyam ahorātrānuśikṣiṇā kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu .

tadyathā api, āyuṣmantaḥ, strī vā puruṣaḥ vā, daharaḥ yuvā maṇḍanajātikaḥ, ādarśe vā pariśuddhe paryavadāte, acche vā udakapātre, svakaṃ mukhanimittaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ, sacet tatra paśyati rajaḥ vā aṅgaṇaṃ vā, tasya eva rajasaḥ vā aṅgaṇasya vā prahāṇāya vyāyamati ; no cet tatra paśyati rajaḥ vā aṅgaṇaṃ vā, tena eva āttamanāḥ bhavati — lābhaḥ vata me, pariśuddhaṃ vata me iti .
