Madhyama Nikāya 15 — anumānasūktam — Inferences
evam mayā śrutam—ekasmin samaye āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāno bhargeṣu viharati sma śiśumāragirau bheṣakalāvane mṛgadāve. tatra khalv āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāno bhikṣūn āmantrayata— “āyuṣmanto bhikṣava” iti.
“āyuṣmanta” iti khalu te bhikṣava āyuṣmato mahāmaudgalyānasya pratyaśrauṣuḥ. āyuṣmān mahāmaudgalyāna etad avocat:
“pravārayati ced api, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ— ‘vadantu mām āyuṣmantaḥ, vacanīyo 'smy āyuṣmadbhir’ iti, sa ca bhavati durvacāḥ, daurvacasyakaraṇair dharmaiḥ samanvāgataḥ, akṣamo 'pradakṣiṇagrāhī anuśāsanīm, atha khalu taṃ sabrahmacāriṇo na caiva vaktavyaṃ manyante, na cānuśāsitavyaṃ manyante, na ca tasmin pudgale viśvāsam āpattavyaṃ manyante.
katame cāyuṣmantaḥ, daurvacasyakaraṇā dharmāḥ? ihāyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pāpeccho bhavati, pāpikānām icchānāṃ vaśaṃ gataḥ. yac cāyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pāpeccho bhavati, pāpikānām icchānāṃ vaśaṃ gataḥ—ayam api dharmo daurvacasyakaraṇaḥ.

‘yaḥ khalv ayaṃ pudgara īrṣyuko matsarī, ayaṃ me pudgalo 'priyo 'manāpaḥ; ahaṃ caiva khalu punaḥ syām īrṣyuko matsarī, aham api syāṃ pareṣām apriyo 'manāpa’ iti. evaṃ jānatā, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā ‘anīrṣyuko bhaviṣyāmy amatsarī’ti cittam utpādayitavyam.

saced, āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ sarvān evemān pāpakān akuśalān dharmān aprahīṇān ātmani samanupaśyati, tenāyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā sarveṣām eveṣāṃ pāpakānām akuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prahāṇāya vyāyamitavyam. sacet punar āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ sarvān evemān pāpakān akuśalān dharmān prahīṇān ātmani samanupaśyati, tenāyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā tenaiva prītiprāmodyeṇa vihartavyam, ahorātrānuśikṣiṇā kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu.
tadyathāpi, āyuṣmantaḥ, strī vā puruṣo vā, daharo yuvā maṇḍanajātikaḥ, ādarśe vā pariśuddhe paryavadāte, acche vā udakapātre, svakaṃ mukhanimittaṃ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ, sacet tatra paśyati rajo vāṅgaṇaṃ vā, tasyaiva rajaso vāṅgaṇasya vā prahāṇāya vyāyamati; no cet tatra paśyati rajo vāṅgaṇaṃ vā, tenaivāttamano bhavati: ‘lābhā bata me, pariśuddhaṃ bata me’ti.
evam eva khalu, āyuṣmantaḥ, saced bhikṣuḥ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ sarvān evemān pāpakān akuśalān dharmān aprahīṇān ātmani samanupaśyati, tenāyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā sarveṣām eveṣāṃ pāpakānām akuśalānāṃ dharmāṇāṃ prahāṇāya vyāyamitavyam. sacet punar āyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuḥ pratyavekṣamāṇaḥ sarvān evemān pāpakān akuśalān dharmān prahīṇān ātmani samanupaśyati, tenāyuṣmantaḥ, bhikṣuṇā tenaiva prītiprāmodyeṇa vihartavyam, ahorātrānuśikṣiṇā kuśaleṣu dharmeṣu” iti.
