madhyamanikāyaḥ 16 - cetaḥkhilasūtram
evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śrāvastyāṃ viharati sma jetavane anāthapiṇḍadasya ārāme . tatra khalu bhagavān bhikṣūn āmantrayata — bhikṣavaḥ iti .
bhadanta iti te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ pratyaśrauṣuḥ . bhagavān etad avocat —
yasya kasyacit, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣoḥ pañca cetaḥkhilāḥ aprahīṇāḥ, pañca cetovinibandhāḥ asamucchinnāḥ, saḥ vata asmin dharmavinaye vṛddhiṃ virūḍhiṃ vaipulyam āpatsyate iti — na etat sthānaṃ vidyate .
katame asya pañca cetaḥkhilāḥ aprahīṇāḥ bhavanti ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ śāstari kāṅkṣati vicikitsati na adhimucyate na saṃprasīdati . yaḥ saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ śāstari kāṅkṣati vicikitsati na adhimucyate na saṃprasīdati tasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya . yasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya, evam asya ayaṃ prathamaḥ cetaḥkhilaḥ aprahīṇaḥ bhavati .
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ dharme kāṅkṣati vicikitsati na adhimucyate na saṃprasīdati … evam asya ayaṃ dvitīyaḥ cetaḥkhilaḥ aprahīṇaḥ bhavati .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sabrahmacāriṣu kupitaḥ bhavati anāttamanāḥ āhatacittaḥ khīlajātaḥ . yaḥ saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ sabrahmacāriṣu kupitaḥ bhavati anāttamanāḥ āhatacittaḥ khīlajātaḥ, tasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya . yasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya, evam asya ayaṃ pañcamaḥ cetaḥkhilaḥ aprahīṇaḥ bhavati . ime asya pañca cetaḥkhilāḥ aprahīṇāḥ bhavanti .
katame asya pañca cetovinibandhāḥ asamucchinnāḥ bhavanti ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāme avītarāgaḥ bhavati avigatacchandaḥ avigatapremā avigatapipāsaḥ avigataparidāhaḥ avigatatṛṣṇaḥ . yaḥ saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāme avītarāgaḥ bhavati avigatacchandaḥ avigatapremā avigatapipāsaḥ avigataparidāhaḥ avigatatṛṣṇaḥ, tasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya . yasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya, evam asya ayaṃ prathamaḥ cetovinibandhaḥ asamucchinnaḥ bhavati .

punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ yāvadartham udarāvadehakaṃ bhuktvā śayyāsukhaṃ pārśvasukhaṃ middhasukham anuyuktaḥ viharati . yaḥ saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ yāvadartham udarāvadehakaṃ bhuktvā śayyāsukhaṃ pārśvasukhaṃ middhasukham anuyuktaḥ viharati, tasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya . yasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya, evam asya ayaṃ caturthaḥ cetovinibandhaḥ asamucchinnaḥ bhavati .
punaḥ ca aparam, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ anyatamaṃ devanikāyaṃ praṇidhāya brahmacaryaṃ carati — anena ahaṃ śīlena vā vratena vā tapasā vā brahmacaryeṇa vā devaḥ vā bhaviṣyāmi devānyatamaḥ vā iti . yaḥ saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ anyatamaṃ devanikāyaṃ praṇidhāya brahmacaryaṃ carati — anena ahaṃ śīlena vā vratena vā tapasā vā brahmacaryeṇa vā devaḥ vā bhaviṣyāmi devānyatamaḥ vā iti, tasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya . yasya cittaṃ na namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya, evam asya ayaṃ pañcamaḥ cetovinibandhaḥ asamucchinnaḥ bhavati . ime asya pañca cetovinibandhāḥ asamucchinnāḥ bhavanti .
yasya kasyacit, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣoḥ ime pañca cetaḥkhilāḥ aprahīṇāḥ, ime pañca cetovinibandhāḥ asamucchinnāḥ, saḥ vata asmin dharmavinaye vṛddhiṃ virūḍhiṃ vaipulyam āpatsyate iti — na etat sthānaṃ vidyate .

katame asya pañca cetovinibandhāḥ susamucchinnāḥ bhavanti ? iha, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāme vītarāgaḥ bhavati vigatacchandaḥ vigatapremā vigatapipāsaḥ vigataparidāhaḥ vigatatṛṣṇaḥ . yaḥ saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ kāme vītarāgaḥ bhavati vigatacchandaḥ vigatapremā vigatapipāsaḥ vigataparidāhaḥ vigatatṛṣṇaḥ, tasya cittaṃ namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya . yasya cittaṃ namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya, evam asya ayaṃ prathamaḥ cetovinibandhaḥ susamucchinnaḥ bhavati .

na yāvadartham udarāvadehakaṃ bhuktvā śayyāsukhaṃ pārśvasukhaṃ middhasukham anuyuktaḥ viharati . yaḥ saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, bhikṣuḥ na yāvadartham udarāvadehakaṃ bhuktvā śayyāsukhaṃ pārśvasukhaṃ middhasukham anuyuktaḥ viharati, tasya cittaṃ namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya . yasya cittaṃ namati ātāpāya anuyogāya sātatyāya pradhānāya, evam asya ayaṃ caturthaḥ cetovinibandhaḥ susamucchinnaḥ bhavati .

saḥ chandasamādhipradhānasaṃskārasamanvitam ṛddhipādaṃ bhāvayati, vīryasamādhipradhānasaṃskārasamanvitam ṛddhipādaṃ bhāvayati, cittasamādhipradhānasaṃskārasamanvitam ṛddhipādaṃ bhāvayati, mīmāṃsāsamādhipradhānasaṃskārasamanvitam ṛddhipādaṃ bhāvayati, utsāhaḥ eva pañcamaḥ . saḥ khalu saḥ, bhikṣavaḥ, evam utsāhapañcadaśāṅgasamanvitaḥ bhikṣuḥ bhavyaḥ abhinirvedāya, bhavyaḥ saṃbodhāya, bhavyaḥ anuttarasya yogakṣemasya adhigamāya . tadyathā api, bhikṣavaḥ, kukkuṭyāḥ aṇḍāni aṣṭau vā daśa vā dvādaśa vā . tāni syuḥ kukkuṭyā samyag adhiśayitāni samyak parisveditāni samyak paribhāvitāni . yadyapi tasyāḥ kukkuṭyāḥ na evam icchā utpadyeta — aho bata ime kukkuṭapotakāḥ pādayoḥ nakhaśikhābhyām vā mukhatuṇḍakena vā aṇḍakośaṃ pradārya svasti abhinirbhidyeyuḥ iti . atha khalu bhavyāḥ eva te kukkuṭapotakāḥ pādayoḥ nakhaśikhābhyām vā mukhatuṇḍakena vā aṇḍakośaṃ pradārya svasti abhinirbhettum .
evam eva khalu, bhikṣavaḥ, evam utsāhapañcadaśāṅgasamanvitaḥ bhikṣuḥ bhavyaḥ abhinirvedāya, bhavyaḥ saṃbodhāya, bhavyaḥ anuttarasya yogakṣemasya adhigamāya iti .
idam avocat bhagavān . āttamanasaḥ te bhikṣavaḥ bhagavataḥ bhāṣitam abhyanandiṣuḥ .
cetaḥkhilasūtraṃ niṣṭhitaṃ ṣaṣṭham .
