saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.13 — nāstiputrasamasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.13 — “Nothing equal to a child”
śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitā khalu sā devatā bhagavato 'ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
At Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
nāsti putrasamaṃ prema, nāsti gosamitaṃ dhanam.
nāsti sūryasamā ''bhā, samudraparamāḥ sarāḥ iti.
There is no love equal to that for a son/child, no wealth equal to cattle.
There is no light equal to the sun; the ocean is the greatest of water-bodies.
nāsty ātmasamaṃ prema, nāsti dhānyasamaṃ dhanam.
nāsti prajñāsamābhā, vṛṣṭir vai paramāḥ sarāḥ iti.
There is no love equal to love for oneself, no wealth equal to grain.
There is no light equal to wisdom; rain is truly the best of the waters.
