Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.37 — The assembly
evaṃ mayā śrutam — ekasmin samaye bhagavān śākyeṣu viharati sma kapilavāstuni mahāvane mahatā bhikṣusaṅghena sārdhaṃ pañcamātrair bhikṣuśataiḥ sarvair evārhadbhiḥ; daśabhyaś ca lokadhātubhyo devatā yenabhūyasā sannipatitā abhavan bhagavantaṃ draṣṭuṃ bhikṣusaṅghaṃ ca. atha khalu caturṇāṃ śuddhāvāsakāyikānāṃ devatānām etad abhavat — “ayaṃ khalu bhagavān śākyeṣu viharati kapilavāstuni mahāvane mahatā bhikṣusaṅghena sārdhaṃ pañcamātrair bhikṣuśataiḥ sarvair evārhadbhiḥ; daśabhyaś ca lokadhātubhyo devatā yenabhūyasā sannipatitā bhavanti bhagavantaṃ draṣṭuṃ bhikṣusaṅghaṃ ca. yan nu vayaṃ bhagavantam upasaṅkramema, upasaṅkramya bhagavato ’ntike pratyekaṃ gāthāṃ bhāṣāmahai॥” iti.
Thus have I heard. At one time the Bhagavān was staying among the Śākyas in Kapilavāstu, in the Great Forest, together with a great Saṅgha of about five hundred monks, all of them arahants. And for the most part, deities from the ten world-systems had assembled to see the Bhagavān and the Saṅgha of monks. Then this thought occurred to four deities of the Pure Abodes: “This Bhagavān is dwelling among the Śākyas in Kapilavāstu, in the Great Forest, together with a great Saṅgha of about five hundred monks, all of them arahants. And for the most part, deities from the ten world-systems have assembled to see the Bhagavān and the Saṅgha of monks. Why don't we approach the Bhagavān and, having approached, each recite a verse in his presence?”
atha khalu tā devatāḥ — tadyathāpi nāma balavān puruṣaḥ samiṅgitaṃ vā bāhuṃ prasārayet prasāritaṃ vā bāhuṃ samiṅget, evam eva — śuddhāvāseṣu deveṣv antarhitā bhagavataḥ purataḥ prādurabhavan. atha khalu tā devatā bhagavantam abhivādya ekānte tasthuḥ. ekānte sthitā khalu ekatamā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
Then those deities—just as a strong man might stretch out his bent arm, or bend his outstretched arm, just so—vanished from the Pure Abodes and reappeared before the Bhagavān. Then those deities, having paid homage to the Bhagavān, stood to one side. Standing to one side, one of the deities recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“mahāsamayaḥ pravaṇe ’smin devakāyāḥ samāgatāḥ.
āgatāḥ sma imaṃ dharmasamayaṃ draṣṭum aparājitasaṅgham॥” iti.
“A great occasion in this forest grove! The hosts of devas have assembled.
We have come to this Dharma assembly to see the unconquered Saṅgha.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“tatra bhikṣavaḥ samādadhuḥ cittam ātmana ṛjukam akārṣuḥ.
sārathir iva netrāṇi gṛhītvā indriyāṇi rakṣanti paṇḍitāḥ॥” iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“There the monks composed their minds and made their hearts straight.
Like a charioteer holding the reins, the wise ones guard their senses.”
atha khalu aparā devatā bhagavato ’ntike imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
“chittvā kīlaṃ chittvā parigham indrakīlaṃ samuhatyānejāḥ.
te caranti śuddhā vimalāś cakṣuṣmatā sudāntāḥ śiśunāgāḥ॥” iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Having cut the stake, having cut the cross-bar, having uprooted Indra's pillar, free from agitation,
they wander pure and stainless, well-tamed young nāgas, guided by the One with Vision.”
iti.
Then another deity recited this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“Whoever has gone for refuge to the Buddha, they will not go to a state of loss.
Having abandoned the human body, they will fill the ranks of the gods.”
