Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.4 — Passing Away

श्रावस्तीनिदानम्। एकान्ते स्थिता खलु सा देवता भगवतोऽन्तिक इमां गाथामभाषत —
śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitā khalu sā devatā bhagavato 'ntika imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
Set in Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:

“अतियन्ति कालास्तरन्ति रात्रयः,
वयोगुणा आनुपूर्व्यं जहति।
एतद्भयं मरणे प्रेक्षमाणः,
पुण्यानि कुर्वीत सुखावहानि” इति।
“atiyanti kālās taranti rātrayaḥ,
vayoguṇā ānupūrvyaṃ jahati.
etad bhayaṃ maraṇe prekṣamāṇaḥ,
puṇyāni kurvīta sukhāvahāni” iti.
“Times pass, nights fly by,
the stages of life are left behind in sequence.
Seeing this fear in death,
one should do meritorious deeds that bring happiness.”

एतद् भयं मरणे प्रेक्षमाणः,
लोकामिषं प्रजह्याच्छान्त्यपेक्षी” इति।
“atiyanti kālās taranti rātrayaḥ,
vayoguṇā ānupūrvyaṃ jahati.
etad bhayaṃ maraṇe prekṣamāṇaḥ,
lokāmiṣaṃ prajahyāc chāntyapekṣī” iti.
“Times pass, nights fly by,
the stages of life are left behind in sequence.
Seeing this fear in death,
one seeking peace should renounce the bait of the world.”
