Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.5 — How Many to Cut Off
śrāvastīnidānam. ekānte sthitā khalu sā devatā bhagavato 'ntika imāṃ gāthām abhāṣata —
Set in Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“kati chindyāt kati jahyāt, katy uttaraṃ ca bhāvayet.
kati saṅgātigo bhikṣuḥ, oghatīrṇa ity ucyate?” iti.
“How many should one cut off? How many should one abandon?
How many further should one cultivate?
A monk who has gone beyond how many attachments
is called ‘one who has crossed the flood’?”
“pañca chindyāt pañca jahyāt, pañcottaraṃ ca bhāvayet.
pañca saṅgātigo bhikṣuḥ, oghatīrṇa ity ucyate” iti.
“One should cut off five, one should abandon five,
and one should further cultivate five.
A monk who has gone beyond five attachments
is called ‘one who has crossed the flood’.”
