saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.43 — annasūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.43 — Food

“Both gods and humans delight in food.
So what kind of yakṣa (spirit) is it that food does not delight?”

“ye tad dadati śraddhayā, viprasannena cetasā.
tan evānnaṃ bhājayati, ’smin loke pare'pi ca.

“Those who give it with faith, with a clear and tranquil mind,
that very food serves them in this world and the next.

tasmād vinīya mātsaryaṃ, dadyād dānaṃ malābhibhūḥ.
puṇyāni paraloke ’smin, pratiṣṭhā bhavanti prāṇinām” iti.

Therefore, having overcome stinginess, one should give a gift, conquering the stain (of avarice).
Merits are the support for living beings in the next world.”
