At Śrāvastī. Standing to one side, a certain deity spoke this verse in the presence of the Bhagavān:
“kati jāgratāṃ suptāḥ, kati supteṣu jāgarāḥ.
katibhī rajo ādatte, katibhiḥ pariśudhyate?” iti.
“How many are asleep among the waking? How many are awake among the sleeping?
By how many is one dirtied? By how many is one purified?”
“pañca jāgratāṃ suptāḥ, pañca supteṣu jāgarāḥ.
pañcabhī rajo ādatte, pañcabhiḥ pariśudhyate” iti.
“Five are asleep among the waking, five are awake among the sleeping.
By five one is dirtied, by five one is purified.”
