saṃyuktanikāyaḥ 1.58 — utpathasūktam
Saṃyutta Nikāya 1.58 — The Wrong Path
“किंस्विदुत्पथ आख्यातः, किंस्वित् रात्रिदिवक्षयः।
किं मलं ब्रह्मचर्यस्य, किं स्नानमनौदकमिति॥”
“kiṃ svid utpatha ākhyātaḥ, kiṃ svit rātridivakṣayaḥ.
kiṃ malaṃ brahmacaryasya, kiṃ snānam anaudakam iti.”
“What is called the wrong path? What is the wasting away of night and day?
What is the stain of chastity? What is the bathing without water?”
“राग उत्पथ आख्यातः, वयो रात्रिदिवक्षयः।
स्त्री मलं ब्रह्मचर्यस्य, अत्रेयं सज्जते प्रजा।
तपश्च ब्रह्मचर्यं च, तत् स्नानमनौदकमिति॥”
“rāga utpatha ākhyātaḥ, vayo rātridivakṣayaḥ.
strī malaṃ brahmacaryasya, atreyaṃ sajjate prajā.
tapaś ca brahmacaryaṃ ca, tat snānam anaudakam iti.”
“Passion is called the wrong path; (the pleasures of) youth is the wasting away of night and day.
A woman is the stain of chastity; to which these people are attached.
Austerity and the holy life, that is the bathing without water.”
