सम्युक्तनिकायः १.७४ — वृष्टिसूक्तम्
samyuktanikāyaḥ 1.74 — vṛṣṭisūktam
Saṃyukta Nikāya 1.74 — Rain
“किंस्विदुत्पततां श्रेष्ठं, किंस्वित् निपततां वरम्।
किंस्वित् प्रव्रजतां श्रेष्ठं, किंस्वित् प्रवदतां वरम्?” इति।
“kiṃ svid utpatatāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ, kiṃ svit nipatatāṃ varam.
kiṃ svit pravrajatāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ, kiṃ svit pravadatāṃ varam?” iti.
“What is the best among things that rise up? What is the best among things that fall down?
What is the best among those that wander? What is the best among those who speak?”
“बीजमुत्पततां श्रेष्ठं, वृष्टिर्निपततां वरा।
गावः प्रव्रजतां श्रेष्ठाः, पुत्रः प्रवदतां वरः॥” इति।
“bījam utpatatāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ, vṛṣṭir nipatatāṃ varā.
gāvaḥ pravrajatāṃ śreṣṭhāḥ, putraḥ pravadatāṃ varaḥ.” iti.
“A seed is the best among things that rise up; rain is the best among things that fall down.
Cattle are the best among those that wander; a son is the best among those who speak.”
“विद्योत्पततां श्रेष्ठा, अविद्या निपततां वरा।
सङ्घः प्रव्रजतां श्रेष्ठः, बुद्धः प्रवदतां वरः॥” इति।
“vidyotpatatāṃ śreṣṭhā, avidyā nipatatāṃ varā.
saṅghaḥ pravrajatāṃ śreṣṭhaḥ, buddhaḥ pravadatāṃ varaḥ.” iti.
“Knowledge is the best among things that arise; ignorance is the best among things that fall away.
The Saṅgha is the best among those that wander; the Buddha is the best among those who speak.”
