Saṃyutta Nikāya 1.76 — What Does Not Decay
“किं जीर्यति किं न जीर्यति, किंस्विदुत्पथ इत्युच्यते।
किंस्विद्धर्माणां परिपन्थः, किंस्विद्रात्रिदिवक्षयः।
किं मलं ब्रह्मचर्यस्य, किं स्नानमनौदकम्।
कति लोके छिद्राणि, येषु वित्तं न तिष्ठति।
भगवन्तं प्रष्टुमागम्य, कथं जानीयाम तद् वयम्?” इति।
“kiṃ jīryati kiṃ na jīryati, kiṃ svid utpatha ity ucyate.
kiṃ svid dharmāṇāṃ paripanthaḥ, kiṃ svid rātridivakṣayaḥ.
kiṃ malaṃ brahmacaryasya, kiṃ snānam anaudakam.
kati loke chidrāṇi, yeṣu vittaṃ na tiṣṭhati.
bhagavantaṃ praṣṭum āgamya, kathaṃ jānīyāma tad vayam?” iti.
“What decays? What does not decay? What is called the wrong path?
What is the obstacle to righteous things? What is the decay of night and day?
What is the stain of chastity? What is the bath without water?
How many holes are there in the world, through which wealth does not stay?
Having come to ask the Bhagavān, how may we know this?”
“रूपं जीर्यति मर्त्यानां, नामगोत्रं न जीर्यति।
राग उत्पथ इत्युच्यते। लोभो धर्माणां परिपन्थः, वयो रात्रिदिवक्षयः।
स्त्री मलं ब्रह्मचर्यस्य, अत्रायं सज्जते प्रजा।
तपश्च ब्रह्मचर्यं च, तत् स्नानमनौदकम्।
षड् लोके छिद्राणि, येषु वित्तं न तिष्ठति।
आलस्यं च प्रमादश्च, अनुत्थानमसंयमः।
निद्रा तन्द्री च तानि छिद्राणि, सर्वशस्तानि वर्जयेत्॥” इति।
“rūpaṃ jīryati martyānāṃ, nāmagotraṃ na jīryati.
rāga utpatha ity ucyate. lobho dharmāṇāṃ paripanthaḥ, vayo rātridivakṣayaḥ.
strī malaṃ brahmacaryasya, atrāyaṃ sajjate prajā.
tapaś ca brahmacaryaṃ ca, tat snānam anaudakam.
ṣaḍ loke chidrāṇi, yeṣu vittaṃ na tiṣṭhati.
ālasyaṃ ca pramādaś ca, anutthānam asaṃyamaḥ.
nidrā tandrī ca tāni chidrāṇi, sarvaśas tāni varjayet.” iti.
“The physical form of mortals decays; their name and lineage do not decay.
Passion is called the wrong path; Greed is the obstacle to righteous things; (the pleasures of) youth is the wasting away of night and day.
A woman is the stain of chastity; to which these people are attached.
Austerity and the holy life, that is the bath without water.
There are six holes in the world, through which wealth does not stay:
Laziness and negligence, lack of exertion and lack of restraint,
Sleep and drowsiness—these are the holes. One should avoid them completely.”
